It’s with a heavy heart to break this news. Our beloved senior most Bangladeshi Citizen and DU Alumni Dr AKM Rafiqul Islam (Dr Rafiq uncle) passed away earlier today, around 1 pm Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un)
Words can’t describe how much we’ll miss Dr AKM Rafiqul Islam. He lit up every room with his sunny smile, his love and care for everyone.
Dr AKM Rafiqul Islam had his B.Sc and M.Sc from Dhaka University, Bangladesh and PhD from Adelaide University, Australia. He enriched the area of plant cytogenetical research for over 50 years including 42 years at Adelaide University. During this period, Dr Islam made several major breakthroughs in the field of wheat cytogenetic and made himself well known all over the world. For his excellence in research work, Dr. Islam received Vice-chancellor’s awards from Dhaka University, Bangladesh in 1964 and four awards from the university of Adelaide (i) K.P. Brley award in 1978, (ii) Charles John Everard award in 1980, (iii) William Culross Award in 1982 and (iv) Significant service Award in 2004.
Dr. Rafiqul Islam was the founder member of Bangladesh Australia Society of South Australia (BASSA) which was established in 1984, first Bangladeshi community organization of South Australia and served as treasurer last 40 years and was the founder of Bangla School (First Bangla school in Australia, established 1997) in Adelaide and served as Principal last 27 years.
We know that Dr AKM Rafiqul Islam touched many lives including many who came Adelaide even for brief time to stay. He will always be loved and will be missed by everyone. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdous and bless his soul. Our sincere condolences to his wife Dr Anoara Islam and all other family members. May Allah help them to overcome their loss and navigate this difficult time.

After Namaz e Janazah on 19th January 2024, then Funeral to burial at AMISSA Muslim Graveyard in McLaren Vale, Adelaide, around 35 Km South of Adelaide City.

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Dhaka University Forum Adelaide, Australia (DUFAA) Incorporated's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held in GreenAcres Community Library meeting room on 29/10/2023. Participations of Dhaka University Alumni were spontaneous in this AGM. The participants of DU alumni unanimously formed a new Executive Committee of DUFAA for 2023-2025.
